"Memories"

2026.01.10 - 01.25

" Touching the soil collected from the land of Ousia, I contemplate the landscape that once existed here.
I wonder if the sunlight reflected on the water and the colors of the vast land were as beautiful as they are today in the days of someone who lived here.
Thinking about the memories that reside in the soil leads to a deeper appreciation for the landscape before your eyes.
I believe that these warm feelings will enrich our lives as we live them now.

This is the first event in 2026, and marks the first anniversary of Ousia.
We will be holding a special exhibition of works by Emi Suzuki, who creates works using mud.

This special exhibition will feature works created using soil from Ousia.

Instead of overwriting the old with the new, we inherit what was there before,
Edit, change and preserve it in a new form.

I consulted with Emi Suzuki about how I could somehow put this idea into practice.
This exhibition was made possible by the fact that the soil from this land, which was left over during the renovation, was turned into artwork.

On the day that Ousia has been open for exactly one year, we will be exhibiting works that have been reborn as art using the soil that holds the memories of the history and time that has accumulated in this place.

The soil material varies depending on the location and land.
It is like a landscape of memories that the land has accumulated over a long period of time and history.

Emi Suzuki's works are created by hardening the mud, scraping it, drawing, hardening it, scraping it... the expressions that are born from the act of "repeated"
It evokes the appearance of strata that have accumulated over a long period of time.
This work gives a powerful sense of both the natural power of the earth and the power of people.
Emi Suzuki and Ousia have created a special piece that is unique to this place, that can only be made in this place, and that can only be made in this place.
Please come and experience this exhibition, which will give you the mysterious feeling that it has been here since ancient times.

Artist Profile
Emi Suzuki
Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1984, he currently lives and works in Kanagawa and Shizuoka Prefectures. He graduated from Nagoya College of Art and Design. He began painting on his own, working as an acrylic painter, before a change in his living environment prompted him to start creating works using clay. Influenced by traditional Japanese sakan and fresco techniques, his unique painting method does not involve firing the clay used as a medium, allowing the original color and characteristics of the clay to be used as is in his works. Clay is a substance made up of the activities and people of the past. He sees interacting with clay as a dialogue with those who are no longer present, and creates mainly two-dimensional works based on the theme of the memories that reside in clay.
